Campus and State Testing

TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) is an annual assessment for students identified as English Learners (ELs) in Texas. It measures their progress in learning English in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The testing window typically occurs in the spring, between February and April. Specific dates vary by district, so students should check with their school for exact testing schedules.

TELPAS uses proficiency levels—Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Advanced High—to indicate a student's level of English proficiency in each domain (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Higher scores indicate greater English language development.

Students can prepare by practicing their English skills daily, especially in listening and speaking. Teachers may provide sample prompts and exercises, and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) offers online practice resources.

TELPAS results help educators track a student's progress in English proficiency and determine the level of support they need in the classroom. The scores also influence decisions about exiting English as a Second Language (ESL) or bilingual programs.
